One Lens, Maximum Flexibility | 100–400mm / 100–500mm or similar focal length

For photographers who prefer to travel light, or need to react to movement and where you can't use a tripod, a 100–400mm or 100–500mm zoom can be an exceptional single-lens safari solution. It provides enough flexibility to photograph everything from an environmental image to a portrait, while allowing you to quickly recompose as the animal moves.

The biggest advantage is speed and simplicity: no lens changes, less equipment to carry, and more time with your eye on the action. The 100mm end also gives you considerably more flexibility than starting at 300mm, particularly when a large animal approaches the vehicle, or on foot, as you are on this tour.

Your adventure begins at Málaga Airport, where we meet before setting off on a scenic three-hour drive into the heart of Sierra de Andújar, with a relaxing stop along the way. As the landscape changes from the coast to the wooded hills of Sierra Morena, anticipation builds for the days ahead and the opportunity to search for one of Spain’s most remarkable wild animals, the Iberian lynx.

Sierra de Andújar is part of the historic Sierra Morena range of Iberian lynx habitat, where conservation efforts have played an important role in the species’ recovery. The wider conservation programme combines habitat management, protection of prey populations, scientific monitoring, captive breeding and reintroduction efforts. Across Spain and Portugal, the Iberian lynx population reached 2,663 recorded individuals in 2025, continuing a long-term recovery, although threats such as road mortality and habitat fragmentation remain.

As you arrive in the Andújar countryside, the experience becomes about more than simply finding a rare species. It is an opportunity to witness a landscape where dedicated conservation work and responsible wildlife tourism can exist alongside one another. After the journey, settle into your accommodation, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and prepare for your first afternoon in the field, cameras ready for the possibility of encountering the elusive Iberian lynx in its natural habitat.

Each day begins early, with our first photography session from 6:30am to 11:00am when the landscape comes alive and the Iberian lynx is at its most active. This is our time to be out in the field, tracking, watching and capturing these elusive cats in the golden morning light.

After an exciting morning in the wild, we return for a well-earned siesta, with time to relax, recharge and review the morning’s images.

As the heat begins to ease, we head back out at around 6:00pm, timing our evening session around the weather and the behaviour of the lynx. The anticipation builds as the light softens and the landscape takes on its evening glow.

We stay out until around 9:30pm, making the most of those magical final moments of light before returning for a delicious evening meal and a chance to share the day’s encounters.

With our first day’s experience behind us, we return to the field at 6:30am, ready for another full day immersed in the world of the Iberian lynx.

The morning session runs until 11:00am, giving us valuable time to observe behaviour, anticipate movement and work on capturing those special images that require patience and precision. Whether it’s a fleeting appearance, an intimate portrait or a glimpse of the lynx moving through its natural habitat, we’ll be ready to make the most of every opportunity.

Following the morning’s adventure, we return for some downtime and a refreshing siesta, allowing us to escape the heat of the day and recharge for the evening ahead.

Around 6:00pm, we head out once more. As the landscape cools and the quality of light transforms, the pace changes. This is a chance to slow down, immerse ourselves in the surroundings and concentrate on capturing the character and behaviour of the Iberian lynx.

We’ll stay out until around 9:30pm, using every last moment of the evening light before returning for dinner.

One final day. Two final sessions. A collection of unforgettable Iberian lynx images.

But the photographic journey doesn’t have to end here. Return in autumn, when the Sierra de Andújar is transformed by a spectacular palette of golden, amber and russet tones. Autumn colour can add incredible depth, warmth and atmosphere to wildlife photography, creating striking backgrounds and a completely different visual character to your lynx images.
